DocBike Shropshire were delighted to attend a very special ladies-only Biker Down workshop at Shropshire Fire and Rescue, held to coincide with International Women’s Day on Sunday.
The event was very well attended, bringing together a fantastic group of women riders from across the area, including several ladies from a local equestrian society. From the outset, there was a real buzz in the room — a warm, welcoming atmosphere with plenty of conversation, enthusiasm, and a shared interest in developing confidence, awareness, and riding knowledge in a supportive environment.
One of the real positives on the day was the use of multiple new mannequins during the practical elements of the workshop. These were extremely well received and meant that everyone attending had the chance to get involved, take part properly, and gain something from the hands-on sessions. Having enough equipment for everyone to participate helped make the workshop feel even more inclusive and engaging.
Following Module 3, The Thinking Rider, attendees were then offered the opportunity to put that learning into practice. They were invited to take part in free taster rides with the local IAM RoadSmart group, SAMM, giving them the chance to build on the ideas discussed in the workshop and apply them out on the road in a real-world setting.
That opportunity was clearly appreciated, with two attendees signing up to continue on to further rider development to help improve their riding skills. It was a brilliant example of how events like this can do more than spark good conversation on the day — they can also encourage riders to take the next step in their own journey, in a way that feels positive, practical, and rider-led.
Overall, it was a fantastic way to mark International Women’s Day: bringing women riders together, creating a genuine sense of community, and opening the door to more confidence, more awareness, and better riding experiences ahead.
