Motorcycle Trauma Care

This course is available to serving emergency service personnel only

The DocBike UK Motorcycle Trauma Care course is designed and delivered by frontline clinicians with real-world experience of serious motorcycle collisions.

Drawing on incident exposure and evidence-based practice, the course is built to increase confidence and competence when managing high-acuity, low-frequency patients.

Delivered in a relaxed format, the course creates an optimal environment for learning, reflection and shared experience.

Who are Docbike and what do we do?

The Docbike charity combines a highly qualified (consultant-level) doctor or experienced paramedic with two wheels to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads due to motorcycle collisions. Wherever possible, this doctor or paramedic also works on the local air ambulance or has enhanced training. It is part of their everyday job, to treat and save the most severely injured and sick patients and help them to reach the hospital alive.

When motorcyclists are involved in a collision, often the injuries are catastrophic, and no amount of medical care can save a person’s life. This is why a lot of the DocBike charity’s time is invested in preventing motorcyclists from being in a collision in the first place.

This course is designed to help serving clinicians to get hands-on experience of managing motorcycle-related trauma in a safe environment from those most experienced in this area.

Types of motorcycle collisions & the injuries to expect

Predicting what injuries may have been sustained from the mechanism history is a valuable tool. This course talks about what types of motorcycle crashes can be linked to certain patterns of injury to give a basis for treatment.

Understanding the mechanism and the forces involved helps clinicians to predict and seek out injuries, prevent further harm and adds to the global decision-making as to whether critical care involvement & trasnfer is likely to be needed. This course gives those attending that awareness in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Motorcycle clothing and best practice for removal

With the advances in motorcycle protective clothing, removing it can be tricky.  This course gives you hands-on experience and guidance on removing Kevlar, armour, talks about personal air vests and motorcycle jackets with humps!

You get to chop up motorcycle clothing! What’s not to like!

Helmet removal

We’ve all been taught how to take a helmet off an unconscious casualty, but how often do we really get to do it?

Learn about the different types of helmets, what to look for that can make your life easier and get comfortable removing both full-face and flip-top lids.

Learn about the CRASHcard dot – there’s casualty information inside the helmet if you see this!

Trauma skills

A large part of the course simply focuses on hands-on practice in a relaxed environment with clinicians experienced in motorcycle collisions and associated injuries on hand to ask questions of.

The DocBike charity exists to help reduce the number of collisions associated with motorcycling, but if we can help the professionals who respond to injured motorcyclists to gain exposure, knowledge and therefore comfort in dealing with these types of incidents, then that’s what we’re about too!

If working with the DocBike charity, either to help deliver the MTC course, or help us in other ways floats your boat, please consider becoming a DocBike volunteer!.

The course is designed for a better understanding of high acuity low frequency calls, to help build confidence in attending these patients.

We have delivered sessions to ambulance clinicians, university pre-hospital groups, fire and rescue services, St John Ambulance teams and others working in emergency care.
