Why this work matters
A collision changes
more than one life.
Motorcycling brings freedom, enjoyment and connection. Yet riders bear a disproportionate share of the harm on our roads. In Great Britain in 2025, motorcycles accounted for around 1% of traffic, but 25% of road deaths.
386 riders and passengers were killed, and an estimated 5,710 were seriously injured in reported collisions. Behind these figures are people, families and communities. The consequences can extend far beyond hospital care, affecting recovery, relationships, employment and independence.
Understanding the problem. Finding ways to change it.
These figures show why better evidence is needed now. They tell us how much harm is happening, but cannot tell us on their own which changes would prevent the most injuries.
MIPnet brings riders, clinicians and researchers together to understand how collisions happen, follow their consequences through care and recovery, and identify where prevention could make the greatest difference. We want to turn that understanding into practical action, keeping the freedom and enjoyment of riding at the heart of our work.

MIPnet grew from collaboration between DocBike and the research team at Dorset County Hospital, supported by Wessex Health Partners and the Wessex Experimental Medicine Network.
Our steering group brings clinical, academic, transport and rider perspectives together. Dr Ian Mew chairs the network; founding co-lead Sarah Doyle now provides governance on behalf of Dorset County Hospital as sponsor.
