Dr Ian Mew to run Manchester Marathon for Docbike & DSAA

by | Mar 15, 2026 | Air Ambulance, DocBike fundraising, DocBike UK

On April 19th, Dr Ian Mew will take on the Manchester Marathon to raise vital funds and awareness for two life‑saving charities that are close to his heart:  DocBike and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Dr Ian Mew is an Intensive Care Consultant and Critical Care Doctor with Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. He is also the co‑founder of DocBike, a charity dedicated to preventing motorcycle deaths and serious injuries through:

  • Evidence‑based research
  • Rider engagement and education
  • Roadside critical care
  • Trauma skills training such as BikerDown

To achieve their goal of eradicating all motorcycle deaths and significantly reducing motorcycle related serious injuries, DocBike works with a wide range of national partners. It uses their research, and experience of engagement and attendance at incident scenes, to help shape and coordinate a national, collaborative response to motorcycle injury prevention.

Why he’s running

Both DSAA and DocBike work together to help save lives across Dorset and Somerset. Ian says:

“I see first-hand the benefit that these charities bring to people when they need real help at their most vulnerable moments in life. Neither charity receives any direct government funding, and both rely on the support of the public to fund their life-saving work.”

Of all the road users in the UK, just 1% of the miles are travelled by motorcyclists, yet they account for around 20% of the serious injuries and deaths. Motorcyclists don’t necessarily have more accidents than other road users, but without the protection of a vehicle, their injuries are far more severe.

These statistics represent real people whom Dr Ian, and his air ambulance colleagues, often treat at the scene. Through his work with DocBike and DSAA, Ian focuses on injury prevention through education, while also responding to critically ill or injured patients when incidents occur.

Why it matters

Neither DSAA or DocBike receive any direct government funding. Every mission, every training session, every life saved is only possible because of public support.

Donations help to:

  • Ensure rapid response when every second counts
  • Teach life‑saving skills to motorcyclists
  • Fund crucial research to reduce crash risks
  • Deliver expert critical care

How you can help

If you would like to support Dr Mew’s marathon challenge and help DSAA and DocBike continue their vital work, please consider donating.
